Polar Cubs Pre-Race Program

If you’ve skied at McCauley Mountain, you’ve probably seen a Polar Cub zip by! This program is the official feeder to the Polar Bear Ski Club Race Program and is designed for our youngest skiers (generally ages 5–6) who are ready to ski independently and begin learning the fundamentals of skiing with a team.

Our coaching focuses on fun, skill development, safety, and the ability to ski as a  team on the mountain. We introduce kids to basic race concepts, terrain awareness, and skiing with peers – all in a playful, encouraging environment.

Program Overview

  • Duration: Typically a 1–2 year program before moving into the Polar Bears Race Team (which begins at age 6 or 7 pending ability for U8)
  • Schedule: Two weekday training sessions after school each week. The bus from Town of Webb School brings them up after 2:10 pm dismissal and practice will end at 3:45 pm.
  • Gear: The cubs are allotted space in the Yurt with the PBSC to stow their gear and must be able to put it on/take it off with little assistance.
  • Transition to Racing: At the end of their time in Cubs, each child will be evaluated to determine readiness for the Polar Bears Race Program

Who It’s For

Kids Who Are:

  • Excited about skiing and having fun!
  • Already able to stay in control of their bodies, stop on command and follow directions while on skis.
  • Able to ski down all Green runs independently at McCauley prior to the start of the program. This is NOT a learn to ski program.
  • Able to ride the chairlift with a buddy (we do have adult support as much as we can but it is not guaranteed)
  • Ready to care for their own equipment and put it on and take it  off to store properly
  • Members of the Polar Bear Ski Club (family membership required)

Membership & Fees

  • Polar Cubs require a $150 family membership fee to join the Polar Bear Ski Club.
  • Additional program fees may apply depending on the season.

Parent Involvement

We love and welcome parent help particularly riding with children on the lift! There are opportunities to assist during training days, and special events!
